🌿 Coleus ‘Pineapple Surprise’ Care Sheet for Terrariums

Introduction:
Coleus ‘Pineapple Surprise’ is a striking cultivar valued for its bright, tropical foliage colours, often displaying golden yellow, lime green, and warm contrasting tones. The cheerful, sunlit appearance of this variety makes it a popular choice for terrarium highlights. This cultivar grows relatively quickly and benefits from regular pruning to stay compact and attractive in enclosed plant displays.

1. Terrarium Setup:

Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix suitable for foliage plants—peat-based soil with added perlite is recommended.
Add a thin layer of activated charcoal beneath the soil to help reduce excess moisture and maintain freshness.Best grown in open or semi-closed terrariums, as ‘Pineapple Surprise’ prefers some airflow and does not tolerate stagnant humidity for long periods.

2. Light:

Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the vivid yellow and green colouring.
Insufficient light may cause the plant to revert to greener shades.
Avoid strong direct sunlight through glass, which may scorch the delicate foliage.
If natural light is low, use a grow light to support healthy growth.

3. Temperature and Humidity:

Maintain temperatures between 18–26°C.
Moderate humidity (50–70%) is ideal.
Protect the terrarium from cold air currents, heaters, or sudden temperature changes.

4. Watering:

Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil begins to dry.
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
In semi-closed terrariums, reduce watering if condensation remains heavy inside the container.

5. Fertilization:

Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growing periods (spring to early autumn).
Use a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
Avoid overfertilising, as this may encourage excessive, weak growth.

6. Pruning and Maintenance:

Pinch growing tips regularly to keep the plant bushy and compact.
Remove flower spikes as they appear to keep energy focused on foliage.
Remove fallen leaves from the substrate to prevent mould or decay.

7. Air Circulation:

Open semi-closed terrariums occasionally for fresh air exchange.
Good airflow helps reduce fungal risks and keeps foliage healthy.

8. Monitoring for Pests:

Watch for spider mites, aphids, and fungus gnats, especially in warm, humid conditions.
Treat early infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

9. Repotting:

If roots become crowded or growth slows, refresh soil or trim roots carefully.
Regular pruning helps keep the plant suitable for terrarium size.

10. Terrarium Companions:

Looks beautiful with darker coleus varieties, Fittonia, Hypoestes, or small tropical foliage plants.
Choose companions with similar light and moisture needs.

With bright light, balanced watering, and regular trimming, Coleus ‘Pineapple Surprise’ will maintain its sunny, tropical charm and add vibrant colour to terrarium displays. 🌿
