🌿 Coleus ‘Ruby Heart’ Care Sheet for Terrariums

Introduction:
Coleus ‘Ruby Heart’ is a striking ornamental cultivar known for its rich ruby-red to deep pink foliage, often with subtle contrasting centres or edging. The heart-shaped colour pattern gives this variety its name. It is a fast-growing coleus and requires regular pruning to maintain a compact, attractive form inside terrariums.

1. Terrarium Setup:

Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix suitable for foliage plants—peat-based soil with added perlite or fine bark is recommended.
Add a thin layer of activated charcoal below the soil to help absorb excess moisture and keep the terrarium environment fresh.
Best suited to open or semi-closed terrariums, as ‘Ruby Heart’ prefers airflow and does not tolerate stagnant, overly humid conditions.

2. Light:

Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the deep ruby colour.
Insufficient light may cause greener, less intense foliage and leggy growth.
Avoid strong direct sunlight through glass, which may scorch leaves.
Use a grow light if natural light is limited.

3. Temperature and Humidity:

Maintain temperatures between 18–26°C.
Moderate humidity (50–70%) is ideal.
Avoid placing the terrarium near heaters, air conditioners, or cold drafts.

4. Watering:

Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels slightly dry.
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
In semi-closed terrariums, reduce watering if condensation is excessive.

5. Fertilization:

Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth (spring to early autumn).
Use a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
Avoid overfertilizing, which can encourage weak, rapid growth.

6. Pruning and Maintenance:

Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage bushy, compact growth.
Remove flower spikes to keep energy directed toward foliage.
Remove fallen leaves to prevent mould or decay in enclosed spaces.

7. Air Circulation:

Provide occasional ventilation in semi-closed terrariums.
Good airflow helps reduce fungal disease and keeps foliage healthy.

8. Monitoring for Pests:

Check regularly for spider mites, aphids, and fungus gnats, especially in warm, humid environments.
Treat early infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

9. Repotting:

If roots become crowded or growth slows, refresh soil or trim roots carefully.
Regular pruning helps keep the plant suitable for terrarium size.

10. Terrarium Companions:

Pairs well with other colourful coleus varieties, Fittonia, Hypoestes, and small tropical foliage plants with similar care needs.

With bright indirect light, balanced moisture, and regular trimming, Coleus ‘Ruby Heart’ will produce vibrant ruby foliage and add bold colour to terrarium displays. 🌿
