🌿 Coleus ‘Wicked Witch’ Care Sheet for Terrariums
Introduction:
Coleus ‘Wicked Witch’ is a dramatic ornamental cultivar known for its dark, rich foliage that often combines deep purple, burgundy, and near-black tones with contrasting veins or edges. Its bold, mysterious colouring makes it an excellent accent plant for terrarium displays. This cultivar is moderately fast-growing and benefits from regular pruning to stay compact.
1. Terrarium Setup:
Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix suitable for foliage plants—peat-based soil mixed with perlite or fine bark is ideal.
Add a thin layer of activated charcoal below the soil to help control excess moisture and keep the terrarium environment fresh.
Best grown in open or semi-closed terrariums, as ‘Wicked Witch’ prefers airflow and does not tolerate stagnant humidity.
2. Light:
Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the deep dark foliage colour.
Low light may cause fading colours and leggy, weak growth.
Avoid harsh direct sunlight through glass, as dark leaves can scorch easily.
Use a grow light if natural light is limited.
3. Temperature and Humidity:
Maintain temperatures between 18–26°C.
Moderate humidity (50–70%) is ideal.
Avoid cold drafts, heaters, or sudden temperature changes.
4. Watering:
Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels slightly dry.
Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
In semi-closed terrariums, monitor condensation and reduce watering if moisture builds up.
5. Fertilization:
Feed every 4–6 weeks during active growth (spring to early autumn).
Use a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
Avoid overfertilising, as this may cause weak, overly fast growth in confined spaces.
6. Pruning and Maintenance:
Pinch growing tips regularly to promote bushy, compact growth.
Remove flower spikes to keep energy focused on foliage.
Remove fallen leaves to prevent mould or decay inside the terrarium.
7. Air Circulation:
Open semi-closed terrariums occasionally to allow fresh air exchange.
Good airflow helps reduce fungal problems and keeps foliage healthy.
8. Monitoring for Pests:
Inspect regularly for spider mites, aphids, and fungus gnats, especially in warm, humid conditions.
Treat early infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
9. Repotting:
If roots become crowded or growth slows, refresh soil or trim roots carefully.
Regular pruning helps maintain a suitable size for terrarium planting.
10. Terrarium Companions:
Pairs well with lighter or brighter foliage plants such as Fittonia, Hypoestes, or other coleus cultivars for contrast.
With bright indirect light, consistent moisture, and regular pruning, Coleus ‘Wicked Witch’ will display its dark, enchanting foliage and add striking depth to terrarium arrangements. 🌿
