Echinodorus paniculatus - Description and Care Sheet

Description: Echinodorus paniculatus is a robust and attractive aquatic plant, often sought after by aquarists for its lush green foliage and easy adaptability. It features long, lanceolate leaves that can grow up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length, giving the plant a bushy and dense appearance. The leaves are usually bright green with a slightly wavy margin, adding a vibrant touch to any aquarium setting. Echinodorus paniculatus is a root feeder and can form a dense root system, which helps anchor it firmly in the substrate.

Natural Habitat: This species is native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly in slow-moving rivers, ponds, and marshes. In its natural habitat, it often grows partially submerged, with the upper parts of the leaves reaching above the water surface.

Care Sheet

Tank Size:

  • Minimum: 60 liters.
  • Recommended: 100 liters or larger to accommodate its growth.

Lighting:

  • Moderate to High: Echinodorus paniculatus thrives under moderate to high lighting. Ideally, provide 2-3 watts per gallon of light. High lighting encourages faster growth and enhances the vibrancy of the leaves.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22-28°C
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: 3-8 dGH (soft to moderately hard water)

Substrate:

  • A nutrient-rich substrate is essential as Echinodorus paniculatus is a heavy root feeder. Aquatic soil or nutrient-rich clay is ideal. Adding root tabs periodically will help maintain healthy growth.

CO2 and Fertilization:

  • CO2: Not necessary but beneficial. Adding CO2 can enhance growth and lead to larger, more vibrant leaves.
  • Fertilization: Regular dosing with roof capsules and liquid fertilizers containing macro and micronutrients is recommended. Focus on providing sufficient iron, as it prevents yellowing of the leaves.

Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Pruning: Regularly trim older, outer leaves to encourage new growth. This will prevent the plant from overshadowing smaller plants in the aquarium.
  • Propagation: Echinodorus paniculatus can propagate via runners or seed production. Cut the runners and plant them in the substrate to establish new plants.

Placement in Aquarium:

  • Due to its size and bushy growth, Echinodorus paniculatus is best used as a background plant or a centerpiece in larger aquariums. It provides excellent coverage and shelter for fish.

Compatibility:

  • This plant is compatible with most community fish species and invertebrates. It can serve as a great hiding spot for small fish and fry. However, avoid keeping it with herbivorous fish that may nibble on the leaves.

Common Issues:

  • Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of nutrient deficiency, particularly iron. Ensure regular fertilization and adequate substrate nutrients.
  • Slow Growth: Could be due to low light or insufficient nutrients. Adjust light intensity and fertilization regimen accordingly.

Additional Tips:

  • Echinodorus paniculatus is generally easy to care for, making it suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Regular maintenance and appropriate care will keep this plant thriving and adding beauty to your aquarium.
