Eleocharis acutangula, commonly known as Common Spikerush or Narrow-leaved Spikerush, is a hardy aquatic plant that thrives in pond environments. It features slender, grass-like stems and inconspicuous flowers, creating a simple and natural appearance in your pond.

2. Sunlight Requirements: Common Spikerush prefers full sun conditions. Ensure that your pond receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day for healthy growth. It thrives in bright, sunny locations.

3. Water Depth: Plant Eleocharis acutangula in water with a depth of 2 to 6 inches. This allows the plant to establish its roots in the substrate while remaining partially submerged. It is well-suited for the shallower edges of ponds and water features.

4. Soil and Substrate: Choose a well-draining, sandy or loamy soil mix for planting Common Spikerush in your pond. Plant the root system directly into the substrate at the recommended water depth. Ensure good contact between the roots and soil.

5. Fertilization: Eleocharis acutangula generally does not require extensive fertilization in a pond setting. The nutrients present in the pond water should be sufficient for its growth. However, you can use a balanced aquatic plant fertilizer sparingly if growth appears sluggish.

6. Water Quality: Maintain good water quality in your pond. Regularly monitor and adjust the pH levels to keep them between 6.5 and 7.5. Ensure that your pond water is free from pollutants and toxins to promote healthy growth.

7. Pruning and Maintenance: Common Spikerush is relatively low-maintenance. Trim away dead or overgrown stems as needed to maintain its appearance. Regularly thin out the growth to prevent overcrowding and promote air circulation.

8. Winter Care: Eleocharis acutangula is generally cold-tolerant and can withstand freezing temperatures. It may die back in the winter and regrow in the spring. Minimal winter care is typically required.

9. Pests and Diseases: Common Spikerush is generally resistant to pests and diseases in pond environments. However, occasional inspection for signs of aphids or snails is a good practice. Treat any infestations promptly with appropriate pesticides if necessary.

10. Wildlife Attraction: The dense growth of Eleocharis acutangula can provide valuable habitat and cover for aquatic insects, amphibians, and small pond creatures. It may also attract birds seeking shelter and foraging opportunities.

By following these care guidelines, you can successfully cultivate Eleocharis acutangula (Common Spikerush) in your pond. This hardy and simple aquatic plant not only adds a natural and unassuming touch to your pond but also contributes to a healthy aquatic ecosystem by providing habitat and shelter for various pond inhabitants.
