Haworthiopsis tessellata

Description: Haworthiopsis tessellata, formerly known as Haworthia tessellata, is a small, rosette-forming succulent in the family Asphodelaceae. This plant is characterized by its thick, triangular leaves that are dark green with a unique, tessellated (checkered) pattern on their surfaces, which gives it a distinct appearance. The leaves are often arranged in a spiral, with small, white tubercles along their edges. Haworthiopsis tessellata produces small, tubular white or light pink flowers on long, slender stalks, typically blooming in late spring to early summer.

Distribution: Haworthiopsis tessellata is native to the arid regions of southern Africa, specifically Namibia and South Africa. It thrives in rocky, well-draining soils, often found in crevices and under the partial shade of shrubs or rocks. Its natural habitat experiences seasonal rainfall and intense sunlight, which the plant is well-adapted to endure.

Care Sheet:

Light:

  • Requirement: Bright, indirect light to partial shade.
  • Details: Haworthiopsis tessellata prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day, can cause leaf scorching. If grown indoors, place it near a window with filtered light or in an east- or west-facing window.

Watering:

  • Requirement: Moderate watering with a dry period.
  • Details: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant is dormant.

Soil:

  • Requirement: Well-draining soil.
  • Details: Use a cactus or succulent mix, or create your own blend with sand, perlite, and a small amount of organic matter to ensure excellent drainage. The soil should be gritty and loose.

Temperature:

  • Requirement: Warm temperatures.
  • Details: Ideal temperatures range from 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect the plant from frost and avoid exposing it to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Humidity:

  • Requirement: Low humidity.
  • Details: This plant prefers dry conditions and does not require additional humidity. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues, especially in humid environments.

Fertilizing:

  • Requirement: Light fertilization.
  • Details: Fertilize sparingly with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring to early summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm the plant.

Repotting:

  • Requirement: Infrequent repotting.
  • Details: Repot only when necessary, typically every few years or when the plant has outgrown its container. Handle the plant gently to avoid damaging its roots.

Propagation:

  • Requirement: Offsets or leaf cuttings.
  • Details: Propagate by carefully removing offsets that grow at the base of the parent plant or by leaf cuttings. Allow cuttings to dry and callous before planting in a well-draining mix.

By following these care guidelines, you can successfully cultivate Haworthiopsis tessellata, enjoying its unique, tessellated foliage and charming flowers in your collection of succulents.
