Nepenthes 'Rebecca Soper' Care Sheet

General Information

Nepenthes 'Rebecca Soper' is a hybrid between Nepenthes ventricosa and Nepenthes ramispina, known for its striking dark red to purple pitchers and easy-growing nature. This intermediate/highland hybrid is well-suited for indoor cultivation, greenhouses, or shaded outdoor spaces in warm climates.

Care Requirements

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light (around 60-80% shade).
  • Can tolerate some morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday sun.
  • A north- or east-facing window is ideal indoors in South Africa.

💧 Watering

  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Water when the top 2 cm of soil feels dry.
  • Use rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water – tap water may cause mineral buildup.

💦 Humidity

  • Requires 60-80% humidity for optimal pitcher development.
  • If humidity is too low, misting or placing the plant near a humidity tray helps.
  • Ideal for terrariums or greenhouses.

🌡 Temperature

  • Day: 18°C – 33°C
  • Night: 12°C – 20°C
  • Avoid temperatures below 10°C.

🌱 Soil & Potting Mix

  • Use a well-draining, airy mix:
    • Sphagnum moss (main component)
    • Perlite for aeration
    • Orchid bark for structure
    • Avoid standard potting soil!

🍽 Feeding & Fertilizing

  • Insects (small flies, ants, or crickets) can be offered occasionally.
  • For fertilizing: Use diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4 strength) once a month.
  • Avoid overfeeding – too much fertilizer can burn roots and reduce pitcher production.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Trim dead or dry leaves and pitchers to encourage new growth.
  • If pitchers dry out, increase humidity and check watering consistency.

🪴 Repotting

  • Every 1-2 years or when roots outgrow the pot.
  • Always use a fresh carnivorous plant mix.

⚠️ Common Issues & Solutions

  • No pitchers forming? → Low humidity or low light. Increase humidity and provide indirect light.
  • Blackened pitchers? → Old pitchers naturally die off, but if new ones turn black, check humidity and watering.
  • Slow growth? → Could be due to cold temperatures or insufficient nutrients. Ensure stable conditions.
