Pilea cadierei ‘Ellen Silver’ — Terrarium Care Sheet
(Aluminium Plant, Ellen Silver form)
Origin & Type
Family: Urticaceae
Native range: Vietnam & surrounding SE Asia
Growth type: Compact, bushy perennial with silver-patterned leaves
Ideal Terrarium Conditions
Temperature
Optimal: 18–28 °C
Tolerates short dips to 15 °C, but avoid below this
Avoid heat spikes over 30 °C
Humidity
60–85% is ideal
Consistent humidity prevents leaf crisping
Still appreciates light air movement — avoid stagnant air
Light
Bright, indirect light
In a terrarium: Position near the brightest side, but out of direct sun to prevent scorch
Too little light → elongated stems, dull leaf markings
Substrate
Light, airy, moisture-retentive mix:
50% fine-grade coco coir or peat
30% perlite or fine orchid bark
20% leaf mould/composted material
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0)
Watering
Keep substrate evenly moist — not soggy
In closed terrariums, water sparingly; overwatering → root rot
Use rainwater, RO, or filtered water to prevent leaf spotting
Fertilising
Weak liquid fertiliser (¼ strength) every 4–6 weeks in active growth
Reduce in winter unless strong growth continues under artificial light
Pruning & Maintenance
Pinch back growing tips to maintain compact, bushy form
Remove yellowing leaves promptly to prevent mould
Can be cut back hard if it gets leggy — responds well to rejuvenation
Terrarium Suitability
✅ Compact growth — stays neat under pruning
✅ High humidity tolerance — thrives in closed environments
✅ Attractive foliage — silver variegation stands out
⚠ Needs regular trimming to avoid touching glass and to prevent mildew
Propagation
Soft stem cuttings root easily in water or moist substrate
Best taken from actively growing tips
Roots form within 1–2 weeks in warm, humid conditions
Quick Tips for Terrariums
Avoid full contact of leaves with wet glass to prevent rot
Ensure occasional ventilation to discourage fungal issues
Works well as a midground filler plant in mixed terrariums
