🌿 Pleurothallis sandemanii Terrarium Caresheet

General Overview
Pleurothallis sandemanii is a miniature cloud-forest orchid from Peru and Ecuador. It forms dense mats of small leaves and produces delicate, translucent flowers that often appear successively. Its small size and preference for stable humidity make it highly suitable for terrariums, provided there is constant airflow.

🌡 Temperature & Climate

  • Range: 16–24 °C (cool–intermediate).

  • Tolerance: Avoid prolonged heat >27 °C. Needs night drops to 14–18 °C for long-term health.

  • Best for: Shaded, cool terrarium setups.

💡 Light

  • Type: Low to medium, diffused light.

  • Placement: North- or east-facing window, or shaded under LEDs.

  • Note: Prefers shadier conditions than Restrepia or Dendrochilum. Too much light → leaf yellowing.

💧 Humidity & Watering

  • Humidity: 80–95% consistently.

  • Watering:

    • Keep roots and moss constantly moist, never dry.

    • Use rain, RO, or distilled water.

    • Daily misting in terrarium (if airflow is good) keeps microclimate stable.

🌬 Airflow

  • Absolutely critical.

  • Needs gentle but continuous air movement in terrariums.

  • A small fan or passive venting is essential to prevent rot.

🌱 Substrate & Mounting

  • Mounting: Best mounted on cork, tree fern, or driftwood with a bed of sphagnum moss.

  • Pots: Small mesh or slotted pots possible, with fine bark + sphagnum + perlite mix.

  • Mounting is preferred—shows natural mat-forming habit and flowers better.

🍽 Feeding

  • Fertilizer:

    • Apply weakly, weekly (1/8–1/4 strength).

    • Use balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar).

    • Flush once a month with pure water to avoid buildup.

🌸 Flowering

  • Produces tiny, delicate translucent flowers, often sequentially.

  • Not a showy bloomer, but flowers add charm when viewed up close.

  • Consistent humidity and cooler temps encourage regular flowering.

✂️ Maintenance & Notes

  • Avoid direct handling of delicate leaves and roots.

  • Remove dead moss or leaves to prevent fungal growth.

  • Repot or remount every 2 years, or if moss turns sour.

  • Monitor for mites and snails, which love fine-leaved Pleurothallids.

Terrarium Suitability:
Excellent, as long as:

  • Humidity is high (80–95%)

  • There is good airflow

  • Temps remain in cool–intermediate range

  • Light is soft and indirect
